Checkout rebuild for Oddbird Labs
Rebuilt a slow, fragile checkout as an accessible React flow with instant validation and one-page payment. A case study by Jakub Novák, Senior Frontend Engineer (Vue & React).
Challenge
Oddbird Labs, a consumer hardware startup, was losing almost a third of mobile shoppers between cart and payment. The checkout was a jQuery-era multi-step form with full page reloads, error messages at the top of the page and no keyboard support.
Solution
I rebuilt the flow as a single React page with inline validation, address autocomplete, remembered details and Apple Pay and Google Pay up front. Every field was tested with a screen reader and the bundle for the page was cut to a third of its old size.
